Tea tree essential oil is extracted through steam distillation of twigs and leaves of tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia), a native tree of Australia. Having a reputation as a ‘cure all’, it’s known to have powerful antioxidant properties and be used to improve the appearance of blemishes and scars, reduce the visibility of age spots and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Tea tree essential oil is known to be effective against fungal infections as it inhibits fungal growth associated with dermatitis and athlete’s foot.
Note: Although internal fungal infections can be very dangerous and even deadly, one should never ingest tea tree oil, even in extremely diluted forms, as it is toxic.
